| ACTIVITIES AROUND MALINDI |
South of Malindi towards Mombasa is the town of Watamu. Here is another Marine National Park. Information on Watamu is available at www.watamu.net. Alongside Gede is the Kipepeo Project Butterfly Farm. This commercially develops a trade in butterflies for collectors around the world, as an eco-tourist project. The variety of spectacular butterflies of the region is on show in various stages of development. South of Gede is the Arabuko-Sokoke Forest. This protects one of the last areas of ancient coastal forest. A Forest Visitors Centre is located at the main gate. Walking or driving routes are available. Bird watching is a speciality. |
On the turn to Watamu are the Gede Ruins, run by the National Museum of Kenya. A large town flourished there in the 13th to 17th centuries. Archaeological finds show trading with the Chinese, Italians and Arabs. Many buildings of the 15th and 16th century have been excavated in a forest setting |
Towards Mombasa past the main gate to the Forest is Mida Creek. |
A new board walk takes you through the mangrove swamp to a bird viewing area on the edge of the creek. A major bird viewing area, but interesting for all visitors. |
Northeast of Malindi is Marafa. Hell's Kitchen is an area of sandstone that has been weathered into a spectacular site with many colours, sometimes described as a mini Grand Canyon. |
